" Baby Scream - Identity Theft "

by Lisa Sutlieff
(Leeds, U.K.)

Juan Pablo Mazzola’s brilliant and hugely underrated Baby Scream is back, bringing a brand new EP for 2010, Identity Theft.

The EP is a mellow and Latin infused collection which owes more than a passing nod to Beatles legend John Lennon. Mazzola’s vocals, at times, could convince even the most hardcore Lennon fans that their idol lives on; in fact the final track, “Mucho Mungo” is even a cover of a lesser known Lennon song. The vocal effects which evoke Lennon so successfully are spot on throughout, even down to his faltering vibrato. This EP is an ode to Lennon, perhaps resulting in the EP’s title, Identity Theft.

However, there is no stealing of identity occurring here. Mazzola’s gentle and charming tribute comes amongst a host of other strengths on the EP. His knack for simple and hook laden songwriting means that Identity Theft, in a similar way to his previous EP, Monsters, is full of captivating melodies and hugely catchy guitar lines. Add to that some accomplished production courtesy of Muddy Stardust and there is a clear recipe for success. Mazzola’s signature sound is all over this EP, and stands firmly despite his awareness of walking in Lennon’s shoes.

It’s a beautiful EP. The infectiously bluesy rhythms, guitars and simple chord structure of “Memories” makes for an addictively mellow, summer-filled track, while the moody, aggressive blues of “Underground Blues” adds attitude to the collection. Add to that a little mild Latin spice, and a big nod to the ‘70s and early ‘80s, and there you have an EP worthy of note. It’s most definitely worth a listen and especially just now when we all need a little promise that a warm spring and summer are on the way. Baby Scream is back, enjoy!

Featured Band:

Gorillaz

Gorillaz is a super classic band, and for a good reason. With some of the best combinations of electronic music, featuring artists from Mos Def, to MF Doom, it's a really incredible band.

Their newest album, "The Fall", was even recording entirely on an iPad! I highly recommend they become an integral part to your music library, and I've been listening to them for the last month straight (Religiously).
