How To Write Better Lyrics

And Combat Writers Block!

The Problem

Why is Lyric writing often one of the most difficult steps in writing music?

Writing Lyrics

You don't want to lay around waiting for inspiration to nip you in the butt, but at the same time you can't seem to get your ideas onto paper.

What do you want to write about?

Not entirely sure.

The one thing you do know is that you don't want to write the same old boring crap that every other Artist writes about. You want to get started on your path to greatness in the music industry. You're all set and ready to go when...

Your mind goes blank.

There's a reason for this. It's because you haven't developed your idea. The truth is, in this ever advancing world, wouldn't it make sense that the music advances too?

Simply put, if you want to advance and change the way the world thinks about music, you can't just keep writing the same old love songs.

A Concept

You need to come up with a Concept.

A Concept? That's right. You need to come up with a story, something to write about. You could create your own little world, with it's own set of Characters, Problems, and Unique differences from the world we live in today.

The Method

Imagine if you took a few months, and every night just wrote one new fact about this world you have created. As times goes by you would find that you've developed something quite intricate.

Now imagine that you take that world, and you create a time line that leads to a story.

Writing Paper

It wouldn't be very hard at all to write a song now. You could just take a portion of your story and turn it into a song (Check out the De-loused in the Comatorium Album for a great example).

An Album?

But what about an album? I mean, you've already taken the time to create this whole Universe, why not take a portion of your characters development and turn it into an album?

I'll bet if you made your Dimension interesting enough, you could even capture an audience!

J.R.R. Tolkien, Cedric Bixler Zavala, J.K. Rowling. All of these people have spent an adequate amount of time creating their own world, so when the time comes to write the story, it just flows naturally.

And it's interesting for the reader/listener.
