What Makes Alcest Such An Emotional Post-Rock/Metal Band?

(And Why Should You Bother Listening To Them?)

What Bands Are They Similar To?

Here are a few bands that are similar to Alcest

  • Amesoeurs
  • Explosions In The Sky
  • If These Trees Could Talk
  • Irepress
  • Isis
  • Mogwai

My Blurb/Rant About Alcest (Why I Like Them):

I first started listening to Alcest when my cousin April showed them to me (The track "Printempts Emeraude"). Right off the bat I could tell that this was an emotional band.

Now a lot of people consider it to be in the black metal genre, but I'm not really sure what I think of that. I think that Alcest is much more likely to fit among the instrument chill genre with bands like "Explosions In The Sky"

In any case, Neige's (Mastermind behind Alcest) french lyrics describing a serene, magical land are such a calming and peaceful experience to listen to, I'd recommend the band simply for that aspect of the band.

Neige records all the instruments himself (Guitar, Drums, Bass, Vocals). Although I feel that you can kind of tell that he's the Jack of All Musical Trades, I think his inexperience with all the instruments (Rather than being really good at one, he's decent at a bunch) comes to the advantage of the music.

Instead of being convoluted by complex rhythms and patterns, the music simply plays off emotion, and only that.

The music could also fit in the "Post" type genre, with each song evolving over top of itself; repetition is a big hitter in Alcest.

So if you are looking for something emotional, calming, and with a somewhat 'faded' or 'dreamy' feel, I recommend you take a listen to some of the tracks below.

Featured Band:

Gorillaz

Gorillaz is a super classic band, and for a good reason. With some of the best combinations of electronic music, featuring artists from Mos Def, to MF Doom, it's a really incredible band.

Their newest album, "The Fall", was even recording entirely on an iPad! I highly recommend they become an integral part to your music library, and I've been listening to them for the last month straight (Religiously).
