What Makes Animals As Leaders Shred Your Face Off So Badly?

TheRealMusician Recommends:

If you want to take marketing your music to another level, then I can't recommend enough John Oszajca's music marketing manifesto. My favorite aspect of his complete program was his stance on email marketing, where he really leverages the that "1000 true fans" philosophy.

His website is a bit hokey (Flaming guitars? Seriously?), but his program really shows independant artists how to get a leg-up on signed artists.

What Bands Are They Similar To?

If you like any of the following bands, you will probably like Animals As Leaders.

  • Between The Buried And Me
  • Periphery
  • The Number Twelve Looks Like You
  • Cynic
  • Cloudkicker
  • Genghis Tron

Why I Like Animals As Leaders

When I went to see The Dillinger Escape Plan in concert, Animals as Leaders opened for them.

Of course, I almost always do research on the opening bands that I'm going to see, so I grabbed their album and was pretty excited to see that this was the opening band I was going to see.

You can read more about that show in my review: The Dillinger Escape Plan w/ Animals As Leaders 2010 | The Rickshaw Theatre.

Tosin Abasi is kind of the main leader of the band. He uses a ridiculous 8-string guitar, so that way he doesn't even need a bassist in the band.

This guy means business.

His skillful guitar shredding creates some of the most unique tones and sounds that you've ever heard from a metal band.

Did I mention he doesn't even run through traditional guitar amps?

Tosin uses a modeling unit called an "Axe-FX". So he achieves all his unique tones and sounds out of a unit that is completely digital.

That's the same for their drums on the first album Animals As Leaders Released (Self-Titled). The drums were entirely MIDI based.

"But Andrew!" You may ask. "How can they tour if they only have MIDI drums? That's totally lame to see a show that a computer is creating the drums for, I might as well only listen to the CD!"

I've got a great explanation for you! You see, after they released their album, a young man named Navene Koperweis put up a bunch of video's on Youtube of him playing their songs on the drums.

Once the band saw the Video's, the integrated him into the band and went on tour with him. He was playing when I saw them live.

Pretty awesome way to find your drummer huh?

Take a listen to some of their songs below, especially if you are a metal fan.

About The Writer

My name is Andrew Muller. I love creative art, music, television shows, movies, video games, and a good story.

If you had to find me somewhere, you would probably find me down at O'neils home cooking eating an organic sweet-potato bun breakfast sandwich with ham.

Among my friends, it's a "Muller Classic Move" to eat Mcdonald's at 2am because it's cheap and open 24/7. The joke here is that I'm an idiot.

I play drums, guitar, piano, and I write & perform music for My Goal Is Telepathy. Take a listen to the latest sound here.
