The Band's vocalist, Ihsahn
Emperor is a progressive black metal band from Norway and are one of the main innovators in the genre. Yeah you might not like them because these guys are seriously insanely hardcore and controversial in both music and their personal lives. Though, it is good that you and other people as well know about them, because they have made some groundbreaking innovations in black metal and metal as a whole.
First off, Emperor is highly respected due to innovating symphonic elements and heavy use of keyboards successfully in black metal. Their albums (especially their first two) have been very well received by critics and fans but if you are a first time listener and are new to the genre it may take a while to get into if at all, the music is still extreme. Very very extreme.
When I first listened to this band it was because their albums were so well received and I was highly interested by their controversial past. Really the thing that you will probably find most difficult to get used to is the high pitched raspy screams that vocalist Ihsahn uses very often (mostly on their first album). Though eventually I got used to it and actually liked how it contributed to the atmosphere of the music. Atmosphere is a key element when it comes to Emperor and it is one of the band's strongest elements.
I'm not gonna go into huge detail on the band's specific sound, you can hear it yourself, but often the band incorporates symphonic and orchestral elements with a traditional metal sound. Sometimes the band will include operatic singing too.
I'm not asking you to like or even pretend to like these crazy people, but if you can get past the band's personal lives and focus on the music alone, you might maybe, just maybe find something really cool and unique. I strongly recommend that if you check them out, listen to their first album In The Nightside Eclipse or their second album Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk, first. I personally prefer their second album but both are easily the band's finest work.

About The Writer
My name is Andrew Muller. I love creative art, music, television shows, movies, video games, and a good story.
If you had to find me somewhere, you would probably find me down at O'neils home cooking eating an organic sweet-potato bun breakfast sandwich with ham.
Among my friends, it's a "Muller Classic Move" to eat Mcdonald's at 2am because it's cheap and open 24/7. The joke here is that I'm an idiot.
I play drums, guitar, piano, and I write & perform music for My Goal Is Telepathy. Take a listen to the latest sound here.
