Francis Bowie EP Review

Upon first impression after viewing the album cover, I expected to hear a genre-defying experiment combining the sounds of Taylor Swift and Korn. It actually kind of WAS like a cross between Taylor Swift and Korn.

TheRealMusician Recommends:

If you want to take marketing your music to another level, then I can't recommend enough John Oszajca's music marketing manifesto. My favorite aspect of his complete program was his stance on email marketing, where he really leverages the that "1000 true fans" philosophy.

His website is a bit hokey (Flaming guitars? Seriously?), but his program really shows independant artists how to get a leg-up on signed artists.

Francis Bowie, you have some really great alternative vocals. And I don’t mean “Alternative Genre” vocals. What I mean is that the background vocals, or any vocals that aren’t his, are just really great! Isn’t that fantastic?

But I’m sorry; I don’t particularly love your voice Francis. Well, mainly just on your track “Wasting my time”. But all those other great singers that you have are just so great; your electro pop arrangements are really great that way!

I love the bells on your song “Endlessly”, and your chorus is somewhat catchy (I could see it being played in the background of some sort of dark, murder montage from a foreign-but-not-too-foreign black comedy). You know, something like Zombieland (not foreign I know, I’m trying to think of other films). 28 days later! Oh yeah, Danny Boyle would totally have that creepy-yet-childish-sounding chorus playing while they chop up zombies with a helicopter.

I suppose I really meant zombie-murder-montage. Oh well, can’t delete it once I typed it.

The best track on this EP by far is “Sunny Day”. It has a really special and happy chorus, the verse vocal lines are fantastic, and the blend of electronic and real instruments is really superb. I could see that song being a single that really gets you some hype, Francis.

I think some of the electronic elements are a bit forced and contrived (Almost 80’s Russian sounding, you know, the type of electronic music that is irrelevant to humans), so I feel that could be improved in the music (Although Sunny Day is not contrived, that track was really excellent!)

There are some decent and original sounding fuzzy synths in there, I like that. Keep doing that man!

What’s the scoop then? How do I finish this dingle-dangle of a review?

Let’s use Batman to illustrate. The Francis Bowie EP is not Batman. It’s not Robin, it’s not Alfred either. Joker has no place here either, nor does two face.

The EP is Bain. It’s not a main character, nor a secondary character, but it’s interesting enough that it has it’s own Wikipedia page. There’s some interesting stuff about him, but he’s not your favourite either.

Would I listen to this EP on my iPod? Not the whole thing, but I definitely thing ‘Sunny Day’ is a good enough song that I would listen to it in my daily listening (I put it on repeat for the last half of this review).

There’s that. Theeeeere’s that.

There’s that.
