Porcupine Tree Lightbulb SunReview Porcupine Tree

Album Review

I think that Lightbulb Sun is kind of the last "Old" Porcupine Tree Album.

If you are familiar with their discography, the album "In Absentia" marks a completely new version of the band. Everything is just that more well done.

And Lightbulb Sun marks the very end of that "Old" Porcupine tree. But let me tell you one thing. Out of that old band, Lightbulb Sun is the very best album they created.

My favorite song on this album is easily "She's Moved On".

The song is simply incredible.

It has lyrics that just are extremely well thought out. I guess it has a bit of sentimental value to me especially, because I started listening to a lot of Porcupine Tree right after I came out of my first serious relationship.

The song brought tears streaming down my face. And I think that is simply incredible.

Porcupine Tree - She's Moved On

Now this album was before the Gavin Harrison [Drummer] Days, so it really doesn't fulfill as much as any of the newer albums.

But I will say, there are still tons of awesome things about it.

Steven Wilson experiments with certain aspects of life, and earth, and thoughts of rejection.

Set List

  • Lightbulb Sun
  • How Is Your Life Today?
  • Four Chords That Made a Million
  • She's Moved On
  • Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled
  • The Rest Will Flow
  • Hatesong
  • Where We Would Be
  • Russia On Ice
  • Feel So Low

Another neat mention I think, is "Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth before it is Recycled".

The song includes a speech by religious Cult Leader of "Heavens Gate". Essentially the people in the Cult believed that they were from another planet, and they all committed suicide in order to go back home.

Simply Touching.

Only a few songs on the album really stuck out for me. Another one of those would be "Hatesong", with it's wickedly groovy bass line at the start.

Lightbulb Sun certainly is an excellent album, and in my opinion is worth buying, or at least listening to.

It doesn't "Nail it" on every front, but it is still an excellent album, and would be a good edition to anyone's music library.

So as I reach the end, I give Lightbulb Sun a...

8.3
Excellent, but not Amazing.

If you haven't done so already:

Featured Band:

Gorillaz

Gorillaz is a super classic band, and for a good reason. With some of the best combinations of electronic music, featuring artists from Mos Def, to MF Doom, it's a really incredible band.

Their newest album, "The Fall", was even recording entirely on an iPad! I highly recommend they become an integral part to your music library, and I've been listening to them for the last month straight (Religiously).
