Shining
Best described as a blend of jazz and black metal, plus some progressive and experimental. Some have described it as extreme metal (which is not quite accurate) or avant garde metal. Whatever you choose to call it, this is a quite interesting band, and well worth a listen if you enjoy heavy experimental music. (Not to be read as "heavily experimental," but "heavy AND experimental")
This genre pushing Norwegian band released their fifth album called "Blackjazz" in January 2010, and this is probably the album I would recommend for starters. Best songs from that album for me would be "The Madness And The Damage Done", "Fisheye" and "Exit Sun". The cover of King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man" is also quite enjoyable (but hardly reminiscent of the original song (which is a good thing, as copying King Crimson just wouldn't work out)).
The black metal elements in their music isn't the kind of unoriginal black metal that you usually hear, by the way, so don't worry. (Not that all of black metal is unoriginal, but you get the idea.)
Check out their Myspace-site to hear some of their songs.
