My Experience:
My Drummer Jet, has a cousin who is in Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. That is how I first heard of them.
So I figure "okay, I'll listen to their music, but he probably just likes them because he is related to them". But not at all.
The band was absolutely incredible and one of the most original things I had ever heard.
This Quote from Wikipedia really should say all that I need to say about this band:
"Their first performance, on June 22, 1999, was to a single banana slug . The following night's performance was their first to a human audience."
And that's all I have to say about that.
Noticeable Traits:
Almost as crazy as Fantomas
Really...Crazy Vocals
Crazy amount of instruments
Crazy Heavy.
Crazy.

Gorillaz is a super classic band, and for a good reason. With some of the best combinations of electronic music, featuring artists from Mos Def, to MF Doom, it's a really incredible band.
Their newest album, "The Fall", was even recording entirely on an iPad! I highly recommend they become an integral part to your music library, and I've been listening to them for the last month straight (Religiously).
