Learn How To Write And Submit Your Own Album Review Here

Writing reviews can be a useful way to analyze other people's music and learn from it. You can see the types of things you liked (and might want to emulate).

You'll also learn very quickly which musical ideas you dislike, which helps to solidify how you identify yourself musically.

Listening to an album with the intent of writing a review really has an interesting effect on you. It causes you to listen in a very critical way, developing that destructive "editor" side of your brain (which is really important when making critical decisions about your music).

I find that writing reviews doesn't really develop your creative side though, so keep that in mind when writing them. You wouldn't want to spend all of your time developing the important destructive force in your brain, while not equally developing creativity, so that you actually have new ideas to edit.

TheRealMusician Recommends:

If you want to take marketing your music to another level, then I can't recommend enough John Oszajca's music marketing manifesto. My favorite aspect of his complete program was his stance on email marketing, where he really leverages the that "1000 true fans" philosophy.

His website is a bit hokey (Flaming guitars? Seriously?), but his program really shows independant artists how to get a leg-up on signed artists.

Resources For Writing Your Own Editorial

If you want to start writing for the web, then I cannot recommend any book more highly than "Make Your Content PreSell".

About 60% of what I know about writing online was learned from that book, and it's incredible.

Although it has a very big business focus in it, and not every chapter will be relevant to you, it does cover everything you need to know when sharing your review below. If you run into a chapter that doesn't seem important, just skip it.

It covers:

  • How to unlock your inner writer (and get over your "I can't write" tendencies).
  • How to write in a way that captures people's attention.
  • Avoiding common formatting mistakes.
  • Why words are more important than graphics.
  • How to eliminate that University/High School "use a bunch of fancy words" mindset, and just say what you want to say.
  • Building credibility with your readers (how to make them feel like you are an authority).
  • How to put a spin, or unique angle on what you write.
  • How to develop your voice.
  • How to outline your article before you start writing it.
  • A whole buttload more.

Tips For Writing And Structuring Your Review

If you want to start writing for the web, then I cannot recommend any book more highly than "Make Your Content PreSell".

Here are some key points from that above book that I highly recommend you pay attention to.

  • Write your article in a reverse-pyramid (put the most important point at the top, and the least important point at the bottom).
  • Use 1 idea per paragraph.
  • Cut to the chase (don't include a bunch of rambling unimportant words).
  • Write to communicate (not to try and impress people with all the fancy words you know). K-I-S-S. Keep it simple stupid.
  • Do not broadcast speak (ie. phrases like "for those of you", or "all of you"). Just speak directly to your reader. Instead of "all of you might not really care what I have to say", say "you might not really care what I have to say".
  • After you've finished writing, go through and edit it, fixing any grammatical errors.
  • When editing, read the article OUT LOUD. Anything that doesn't flow properly will be revealed when you say it out loud. You can then fix the problem.
  • If you want to become a really good writer, do it every day.

As a quick note, I DO copy+paste every review into Google to make sure that it isn't plagarized, so don't bother submitting it if it's copied.

About The Writer

My name is Andrew Muller. I love creative art, music, television shows, movies, video games, and a good story.

If you had to find me somewhere, you would probably find me down at O'neils home cooking eating an organic sweet-potato bun breakfast sandwich with ham.

Among my friends, it's a "Muller Classic Move" to eat Mcdonald's at 2am because it's cheap and open 24/7. The joke here is that I'm an idiot.

I play drums, guitar, piano, and I write & perform music for My Goal Is Telepathy. Take a listen to the latest sound here.
