My Experience:
Tool was another one of those bands that just took me a long time to get.
I remember listening to "Rosetta Stoned" and thinking it was the most retarded song I had ever heard.
I don't know how, but somewhere along the way, it just clicked.
I think it was when I first heard the song "Aenima" and read the lyrics along with it. I just sat there with my jaw open and thought "Wow"...
I was taken by that. And ever since that point, Tool has been in my Top 5 Bands of All time.
They are amazing.
I have actually played a cover of "Vicarious" in Concert with my band before. Although due to technical difficulties, you couldn't even hear the bass...so...I mean...Tool with no bass pretty much isn't anything at all.
I don't even think I have to tell you how much of a failure that was.
By the way, Tool has the coolest album covers known to man. They really like to reinforce the value of having a physical album, and they won't even let their songs be put up on iTunes or any other services like that.
And one way they entice people to buy the physical copy is to make the album worthwhile, not just with the music, but by having lots of extras on the albums, such as really cool art and such.
Noticeable Traits:
The Most Incredible Bass tone to ever exist
Maynard's Insightful Lyrics
Thick Palm Mute's
Changing up Riffs very slightly as songs progress
Excellent Use of Reverse Time Signatures (See Vicarious Before the Chorus).
