Canada tends to be known mainly for indie rock and Celine Dion, but Saskatoon rock/punk duo Vulture Kult are determined to change all that with "Don't Let Rock N' Roll Ruin Your Life", a short but punishing rock release with strong punk and metal elements. Hans Bielefeld (guitars, lead vocals) and Bradley Friesen (drums, vocals) make a noise that you'd swear was coming from a 4-piece band.

Something about the chemistry of these two makes you think they were joined at the hip at some point early in life, and this is one case where the rock duo scenario pays off. For one, they can't be compared to the White Stripes because the drumming is very well done. The guitar parts follow suit, with their share of technical playing.

Vocally, Hans Bielefeld sits somewhere between original AC/DC vocalist Dave Evans, Motorhead's Lemmy Kilmister, and Fugazi's Ian MacKaye. It's a pleasing snarl full of attitude and suitable for Vulture Kult's mission to bring some heaviness back to modern rock.

While there are a few misses on this CD such as "Avenue H", "Don't Let Rock N' Roll Ruin Your Life" contains more than it's share of hard rocking singles like the addictive "Electric Medication", "Go Loose", "Vultures From Above" and "Welcome to the Land of the Dead". The tracks stay consistent and balanced, remaining true to the rock n' roll style the band have carved out for themselves and never straying too far away except for the album's anomaly "Move of Me"; a dark and introspective dreamy tune.

"Don't Let Rock N' Roll Ruin Your Life" delivers what it promises and should give Vulture Kult plenty of rock and punk cred.

About The Writer

My name is Andrew Muller. I love creative art, music, television shows, movies, video games, and a good story.

If you had to find me somewhere, you would probably find me down at O'neils home cooking eating an organic sweet-potato bun breakfast sandwich with ham.

Among my friends, it's a "Muller Classic Move" to eat Mcdonald's at 2am because it's cheap and open 24/7. The joke here is that I'm an idiot.

I play drums, guitar, piano, and I write & perform music for My Goal Is Telepathy. Take a listen to the latest sound here.
